David laid quietly and watched Timo sleep, a small smile on his face. The baby between them stared up at him, her eyes wide and his smile grew. He propped himself up on his elbow and leaned down, nuzzling into the Sophie’s neck and making kissing sounds. The baby giggled in his ear and plump fists grabbed at his hair.

David dropped little kisses in a line up the baby’s cheek until he planted a tiny one right on her nose. Sophie craned her head up, her mouth opening wet and wide, and she tried to gum David’s chin. Though he’d tried to keep quiet so as not to disturb Timo’s rest, David couldn’t stop the laugh that bubbled up when his daughter tried to get suction, not minding the little bit of stubble he had growing there.

He glanced up quickly, his smile still spread wide on his face, and met Timo’s eyes, crinkled from the matching smile on his lips.

“Hi.” Timo whispered.

“Sorry, we didn’t mean to wake you.” David spread his hand over Sophie’s belly and wiggled his fingers until she grinned toothlessly at him and brought her legs up, pulling at his fingers.

“I don’t mind.” Timo sat up, rising up on his elbow, mirroring David. With one finger, he stroked down the soft skin on Sophie’s leg. “How long has she been up?”

“Since four this morning.” David yawned and covered it quickly with his hand.

Timo glanced at the window. Dusty sunbeams shined through open green slats, and it looked to be about mid-morning. “David, I’d have gotten up with her. You just have to wake me up.” Timo took David’s hand and kissed the heel of his palm.

“If I have to wake you up, it means I’m already awake. There’s no point in both of us having to get up.” He looked down at Sophie, who was alternating staring at one father, then the other. “Right, Soph? Besides,” he raspberried her belly, “I think she’ll go to sleep any time now.”

Timo grinned and carded his fingers through David’s hair. “Not if you keep playing with her, she won’t.” He sat up on the side of the bed and pulled his sweatpants on. Turning around, he slid a palm under Sophie’s head and the other under her diaper, pulling her to him. “Let me take her; you get some sleep.”

“I’m fine.” David protested, sitting up to kiss the tiny fist that was wrapped around his finger, “I’ll make breakfast.”

“David,” Timo stood by the side of the bed, holding Sophie to his chest and rocking subtly back and forth, “you’re not fine. You have circles under your eyes and you’re exhausted. Get some rest.”

David looked at his husband for a moment, as if trying to make up his mind, before sighing and sliding back under the covers.

“She’ll be here when you wake up, baby.” Timo held Sophie to his shoulder and leaned down to brush his lips over David’s. “Until then, I’m gonna go hang out with our pretty little girl.”

David cuddled into the comforter and pulled Timo’s pillow to his chest, nuzzling into its softness and relishing the scent Timo had left there. His eyes drifted shut, and just before the darkness settled over him, he heart Sophie gurgle and Timo chuckle.

“C’mon sweetheart, how about we get a bottle and let Daddy sleep a little while?”

The door closed behind them and David fell asleep with a sigh and a smile.
