Summary: Timo takes David on a date. David doesn't have a clue.
Author's Note: A 20_in_09 fic: Pasta
David opened the thick, black menu and ran his finger down the list of available entrees. There weren’t many and they didn’t have any prices next to them. He wasn’t quite sure why, but his mother had always told him that if he had to ask the price, he couldn’t afford it. His brows furrowed as he continued scanning the selections. None of this stuff sounded familiar to him and he was starting to wonder what on earth he would order.
He looked up, watching the waiters delivering meals to other tables. Nothing looked familiar on any of the trays, and everything was dressed up like they should take a picture of it, not eat it. A waiter walked by carrying a tray with a dish that was on fire and David poked Timo’s knee under the table.
“Timo, what are we doing here?” David peered further into the restaurant, squinting in the dim light from the candles in the middle of the table. It was quiet, hushed, and the only sounds he heard were the hissing whispers of other diners and the clinking of their silverware against the fine china the food was served upon.
Timo peeked over the menu at him and opened his mouth to answer when a waiter in coattails appeared by their table and cleared his throat. “Would sir be ready to order?”
Timo stared up at the man and then looked at Timo, his eyes wide and questioning. David shook his head quickly, minimizing the movement when the waiter scowled at the teenagers. They were already way under-dressed for this restaurant and now David felt like a child, being stared down by a waiter in a penguin suit.
“Sorry,” David kept his voice low, “I need more time.”
Timo took charge then and echoed David, “No, we’re not ready. Come back in a bit, thanks.”
“As you wish, sir,” the waiter said, sounding bored and turning on his heel.
“Timo,” David ducked his head, leaned toward Timo and whispered, “You can’t afford this place, and I know damn well that I can’t afford this place. So what the hell are we doing here?”
Timo blushed. His face turned a bright shade of pink, and he ducked his head, hiding his eyes beneath the brim of his cap. He mumbled something David couldn’t hear and David leaned further across the table.
“What was that?”
Timo grabbed his water glass and took a long swallow. “I said…oh god, I don’t want to say it again.”
David smiled and cocked his head. He was curious about why they were here but he was even more curious about the reaction the question was getting from Timo. “Just say it already.”
Timo dropped his hands to his lap and they fidgeted there. “Fine.” He took a deep breath. “I wanted to take you on a real date.”
David squinted at him. “A real date.”
“Well, yeah. We’ve been, um…” Timo looked uncomfortable with the words that he needed to say, but he’d always been uncomfortable talking about his feelings. Not just for David, but for anything. It was a byproduct of a shitty childhood and Timo tried valiantly to overcome his discomfort. He made himself say what he was feeling. “We’ve been friends for a long time, right?”
David looked confused. “Yeah…?”
Timo took another sip of his water, his mouth so dry he could down the whole glass, but he restrained himself. He didn’t need to be visiting the bathroom all night and David was waiting for Timo to say more.
“I like you, Davii.” Timo’s blush intensified with the confession, and he ducked his head again, blowing out a held breath. He slurped down more water and set the glass back on the table harder than he intended, splashing water over the side of the glass and onto the smooth, white tablecloth .
David propped his elbow on the table and rested his chin on his hand, his face thoughtful. “I like you, too. I thought you knew that.”
Timo huffed. “No, I mean I like you, David. Like I want you to…” Timo stuttered, “I, um…like I want you to be my boyfriend.” He finished the sentence quickly, blowing it out hard on a breath.
David stared at him for a moment and Timo felt like he could crawl right under the table. The tablecloth should hide it well when he dies from embarrassment under there, he was sure.
“Timo,” A smile began to bloom on David’s face, “that’s what I mean. I like you, too. And, um,” It was David’s turn to blush, as smile still on his face, his eyes sparkling, “I kinda thought I was already your boyfriend. You just didn’t know it yet.”
Timo looked up quickly and questioning eyes met David’s, shining in the candlelight. “Yeah?” He asked, just the smallest sound, as if saying it too loudly would scare David away and make everything he just said not true.
“Yeah.” David’s smile grew, so radiant that Timo thought he shined brighter than any candle in the room. David held his hand out to his friend, palm up.
Timo thought his chest would burst from the happiness he was holding in and he grinned at David. He lifted his hand from his lap and softly grasped David’s fingers with his own, marveling at how different just David’s hand felt when he was no longer just David, Timo’s best friend, but David, Timo’s boyfriend. Timo squeezed those fingers carefully, overwhelmed.
“So,” David started, “you want to take me on a real date?”
Timo chuckled and looked around them before settling his eyes on David again. “Yeah, but this is…”
David laughed, “Yeah. This is not us.” He glanced at the waiter headed toward them again, “Coattails?”
Timo stifled a snort, “I don’t know, it sounded good at the time.”
David grinned and shook his head. “How about pasta at that place they just opened in the plaza? I heard it’s really good.”
Timo nodded quickly, “Let’s go.”
They scooted their chairs back and split up, rushing by on either side of the waiter, spinning him around and leaving him looking dumbfounded. The teenagers linked their hands again on the other side of him and grinned giddily at each other.
At the exit, Timo held the door open for David, and as he followed, he leaned back into the room and waved a cheerful goodbye to the waiter.
Timo was going on a date. A real date. With his boyfriend.
