The light was pink through Tom’s eyelids and he held them closed as long as he could. He was warm and comfortable; his legs entangled with Bill’s and Bill’s head nestled into the crook of his neck and shoulder. He lay there, breathing deeply, breathing Bill’s scent and his own scent and the lingering smell of sex in the room and he thought this had to be the most perfect way ever to wake up.
Finally, he blinked his eyes open, squinting them to shield against the sunlight shining in brightly through the window. Tom had forgotten to close the curtains last night and he wished like hell now that he’d remembered. Not only because the light was near blinding him, but because he didn’t know what kind of show he and Bill had given the neighbors the night before!
Then again, he thought, he almost didn’t care. Tom could find himself not worrying about a lot of things, waking up with Bill in his arms. He looked down at the man he cradled there and couldn’t help the smile that bloomed over his face.
Bill hadn’t washed his face, still had all his makeup on when they’d come to bed, and now that makeup was melted and smeared in dark circles under his eyes, the flakes of mascara clinging to long, thick lashes and settling stubbornly against the delicate skin of Bill’s eyelids. He had no lip gloss on; they’d kissed that off before they had even come upstairs, and Tom didn’t mind at all. He loved the natural color of Bill’s lips, very light pink and full. Bill would probably be mortified when he awoke and found the Tom had been staring at him, admiring him while he slept, so Tom took advantage while he could, restraining himself from kissing those full lips or loving Bill with his lips and tongue until Bill woke up and loved him back.
And that thought led to the one that he’d been trying to avoid. He didn’t want to think about love, didn’t want to even consider it. Love was frightening, love can hurt you, love should come with a warning label for stupid people who find themselves stumbling into love when they have no business doing so…when they have a child to raise.
Yet, lately when Tom looked at Bill, all he could think about was love. How much he loved having Bill around, how much he loved it when Bill called him and woke him up at 1:30 in the morning because he always forgot how late it was and that Tom had to work the next day. How much Bill cared for Janni and always thought of her when he talked about things they should do together. Tom had never met a better man, and when he thought of him, he could only think about love.
His eyes lingered on Bill’s face, taking in the curve of it, the skin that would be perfect if it wasn’t for a blemish by Bill’s hairline, the mole beneath his lip and then his eyes focused on Bill’s lips again. They were beautiful, as far as lips go, but it was what else he knew about them that made Tom smile. He knew that the most wonderful words came from those lips; Bill had called him ‘baby’ and while that was not an endearment that he’d ever really enjoyed before, coming from Bill’s mouth, it had felt like love. And as far as he was concerned, it was. He knew how those lips tasted and when they kissed, Tom wanted to be able to dive right in and sink himself into Bill’s mouth, into his flesh, into his soul, and Tom couldn’t hold himself back any longer. Bill would just have to sleep later.
Tom kissed him, as softly as he could, his breath catching at the slight contact between them. He had gotten past asking how a man could make him feel like this; now he wondered how he could make him feel even more than a week before? Than a day before? Bill’s eyelids fluttered and he groaned into the kiss, moving his lips against Tom’s until Tom pulled him tight against his chest.
It had to be love, Tom decided, and deepened the kiss, dipping into Bill’s mouth and running his palm down his back until his fingers played over the swell of Bill’s ass.
They didn’t hear the footsteps in the hall until there was a thump against the bedroom door and it was swinging open. Janni came barging in, all smiles and giggles. “Daddy, guess what we—“ She stopped just inside the door, looking back and forth at the men in the bed, who had broken away from each other quickly, Bill burying his face in the pillow. “Hi, Bill! Do you want to see what me and Grandma did?”
“Janni, what the—“Tom sat up and rubbed his eyes. He should have known. As irritated as he was with Janni for barging in, he should have known this would happen. He’d locked the outside door but not the bedroom door and Simone had a key to the house. “Go downstairs, please. I’ll be down in a minute.”
Janni shrugged. “Okay.” She left just as she came, skipping and smiling and she left the door open behind her.
Tom quickly got up and closed it then dived back under the covers. Bill peeked at him with one eye. “We didn’t lock the door.”
“Nope.” Tom stared at the ceiling. “How does this happen to us?” He looked over at Bill, his brows raised. “I blame you, you know.”
Bill propped himself quickly on his elbows. “What? I think we’re both to blame for this, don’t you?”
Tom shook his head. “Nope. Your fault. I told you I can’t think when you’re around.”
Bill stared at him. “Oh right, because I distract you.”
“Yep.”
Bill leisurely licked a fingertip and started to trail it down Tom’s chest, pulling the blanket down with it. “I have more ways to distract you, you know.”
Tom grabbed Bill’s hand and dragged it down to his dick, wrapping Bill’s fingers around its hardening length and making them groan shortly with the contact. “I know; that’s the problem.”
Before Bill could get a good stroke in, Tom brought his hand back to his lips and kissed it quickly. “However, we need to go talk to Janni and I can’t think about that. And neither can you. Come on, let’s do this.”
Bill grunted and fell back against the sheets before blowing out a long breath and climbing out of bed to get dressed.
Bill followed Tom down the stairs to find Simone standing in the living room with her arms crossed over her chest.
“Hi, Mom.” Tom felt his face heat up and it was as if he was sixteen, making out with that hot girl from Biology and getting caught by his mother. The look she gave him was about the same as back then, loaded with disappointment.
“Tom. Hi, Bill.” She looked over Tom’s shoulder where Bill’s heat warmed his back. She turned to where Janni was playing with a book of stickers on the coffee table. “Janni, why don’t you go put your dirty clothes in the hamper?”
As soon as Janni had grabbed her overnight bag and run upstairs, Simone turned back to them. “You know, I didn’t worry about letting her come wake you up, Tom, because I didn’t realize that you’d be in bed together.” The frown on her face was heavy in her voice.
Her tone grated on him, picking at him and he found his ire rising quickly. “I’m sorry; I wasn’t aware I had to keep you updated on the status of our relationship.” Tom crossed his arms over his chest as well, and they stood facing each other.
Simone’s eyebrows shot up. “You know that’s not it at all. You could have locked the door.”
“We did lock the door! We locked the door to the house. I didn’t think we had to lock the door to the bedroom.” He looked back at Bill, who looked down at his feet before putting a strong hand on Tom’s shoulder. “Janni just walked into my room and saw us in bed together. She didn’t see anything bad, but I need to deal with that right now. What I don’t need to deal with is you passing judgment on me.”
“You’re gonna have to be more careful, Tom.” Simone addressed Tom but she looked at Bill, as well and Tom felt Bill stand a little straighter behind him.
“You think I don’t know that now?” His voice started to rise and he struggled to bring it down to a calm level. “I’m so new at this, Mom. I haven’t been with anyone since Nikki and now I have Bill and I’m just trying to figure everything out. I’m…” He took a deep breath, letting it out slowly and rubbing at the back of his neck. “I’m going to make mistakes, but I’ll deal with them. We’ll learn from them.” He reached back and snagged Bill’s hand in his, squeezing it softly.
Simone didn’t look entirely convinced but she sighed and reached for her purse. “Okay.” Hoisting her bag onto her shoulder, she stopped in front of them and looked up at her son. “Okay. I mean, what else can you do, right? But be careful, honey. Okay?”
Tom leaned down and kissed her cheek. “I will. We’ll be fine.”
Running her hands up and down Tom’s arms as if to comfort him when it was she who needed the comforting, she let her hand rest over Bill’s on Tom’s shoulder. “And I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be judgmental. It’s just—“ She looked toward the stairs. “It’s Janni. She’s so beautiful and sweet and I don’t want her to get hurt.”
“She won’t get hurt, Mom.” Tom broke away and started inching toward the door, hoping his mother would follow. “There’s no way I would let her get hurt.”
“I know. You know me, I’m just over-protective.”
“I know you are. And believe me, I’m pretty over-protective, myself.” He snorted to himself, thinking about all the dates that he would scare off when Janni became a teenager. “Thank you for taking Janni last night. I appreciate it.”
“Don’t even mention it. We had a good time!” She waggled her fingers, freshly manicured and painted with purple polish, dazzling with glitter and Tom grinned all the way back into the living room after she drove off.
“Can we make our own sundaes again?” Janni pulled at Tom’s shirt and bounced between her father and Bill as they stood in the ice cream aisle. “Can we get chocolate?”
Tom raised his brows and grabbed Janni’s hand, stilling the tugging at his shirt. “Cut that out and we’ll think about it!”
“Make your own sundaes?” Bill scanned the different types of ice cream, quite familiar with that aisle, though he preferred his ice cream rather plain.
“She did it in preschool once and when she got home, that was all she could talk about. I think we only did it once because I just can’t afford to buy all the ingredients to make sundaes at home all the time.” Tom pushed the cart toward gallon tubs of vanilla ice cream.
Bill looked down at Janni, who looked at her father then back at the ice cream, her face shining and hopeful. How could he deny that face?
“Then this time is on me,” he told Tom, taking over the helm of the shopping cart. “You help Janni find what she wants on her sundae and she’ll have it.”
Tom stopped to stare at him. “Are you sure?” Janni practically vibrated next to him, waiting for Bill’s answer.
“We’re shopping so I can make a supper that Janni will eat, too, right? And what’s the perfect supper for a kid without dessert?” He barely got the last word out before Janni squealed and launched herself at him, hugging his thighs hard.
Laughing, Bill petted her hair. “Help your dad find what you want?”
“YES!” Janni grabbed Tom’s hand and pulled him to the display of chocolate syrup and nuts.
Bill trailed behind, thinking about what he’d make for supper. They had decided to wait until tonight to talk to Janni about her walking in on the two of them in bed and Tom had thought they could spend some time together; have supper, play some “Candyland” and bring the subject up casually. He didn’t want Janni to think they were upset with her, but she needed to know that she couldn’t come barreling in Tom’s room any time she pleased anymore. Bill found a gallon of French vanilla and placed it in the cart before following Tom and Janni around the corner to the produce section, their arms already laden with sundae toppings.
He found them stopped in front of a rack of strawberry cartons. Janni’s eyes were nearly glazed over with want for the berries, bright red and so ripe that Bill could smell them from the end of the aisle, and Bill waited for them to choose a carton, shaking his head. Janni wasn’t spoiled, by any means, and Bill thought there was nothing wrong with giving her a little bit of happiness where he could. And if that happiness came in the form of ice cream covered in chocolate and strawberries, well, he could certainly do that every once in a while.
As Tom found room for the strawberries in the cart, Janni asked, “Can I eat one in the car?”
“Ew, no! That’s gross. We have to wait to get home and wash them.” Tom took her hand and they walked around the display, Bill following shortly behind. “Oh, Mr. Shasky! How are you?” Tom held out his hand and the man in the business suit smiled and shook Tom’s hand enthusiastically.
“Fine, fine, and how are you?” He slicked his comb-over off his forehead and pointed casually at Tom. “Tom Kaulitz, right? You’re slated to the do the marketing cover for us.”
“Yes, sir. I actually have a few ideas that I’m just about ready to pitch to you—“
“Bill, did you see the strawberries Dad got? But he says I can’t eat any in the car because we have to wash them first.” Janni held her carton up like a prized possession and Bill shushed her with a finger to his lips.
“Come here and let your daddy talk business.” Bill held his hand out for the strawberries and Janni handed them over, watching very carefully to make sure Bill stored them safely in the shopping cart. He bent over, holding his arms open, and Janni wrapped her little arms around his neck while he picked her up and settled her on his hip.
“And this is your daughter, Tom?” The man wiggled a plump finger at Janni’s belly and she squirmed away, burying her face in Bill’s neck.
Tom’s smile was big and proud. “Yes, sir. Mr. Shasky, this is my daughter, Janine and my…” He paused as his eyes caught Bill’s. “My partner, Bill Trümper.”
Bill’s surprise was only trumped by the size of his smile. He hadn’t expected that from Tom. While Tom had hinted that he might like Bill more than just a little, Bill didn’t know that Tom had been that serious about what they had. Caught up in Tom’s eyes, he almost missed Mr. Shasky’s hesitant tone. “Partner? But you said you work alone.”
Tom nodded. “I do.”
Mr. Shasky looked at Bill and back at Tom, wrinkling his brow in confusion until his comb-over fell back over his forehead. “But you said he’s your partner.”
Tom grinned again and held his arms out to Janni, who leaned away from Bill until she’d transferred onto Tom’s hip. “Yes, sir.”
“Daddy,” Janni whispered, staring warily at Mr. Shasky, “I’m hungry. I want Bill to cook now.” She leaned her head down on Tom’s shoulder, never looking away from the man in the suit.
Mr. Shasky cleared his throat and his face was studiously blank. “I won’t keep you any longer. Nice to meet you, Bill.” He nodded at Bill, then at Tom. “Tom.” He turned back to the tomatoes, squeezing each one in turn and Bill knew that they’d been dismissed.
He turned the cart around and hooked his arm through Tom’s, squeezing it. “Maybe some wine to go with supper?” He led Tom around the other side of the aisle.
Tom blew a breath out. “Maybe something stronger.” He gave Bill a bashful smile. “Partner.”
Bill grinned back, his stomach flipping hard. “Partner, huh?”
“Mhm.” Tom hummed. “You didn’t mind, did you?”
“Mind? God, no. But maybe we should talk about it after Janni goes to bed?” He raspberried a giggling Janni on the cheek and kissed Tom on his.
“Daddy, Bill’s not your partner,” Janni exclaimed loudly, winding her arms tighter around Tom’s neck. “Bill is just your friend that sleeps with you, right?”
Bill cocked a brow and Tom groaned.

Date: 2009-08-14 04:45 am (UTC)Watching them fall in love at every step of the way has been such a treat. It's so delightful to see new parts of this posted. Yay for more Janni!
I don't think Janni's going to have a problem with their relationship, at all. I think it's the rest of the town I'm worried about by this point.

Date: 2009-08-14 05:27 am (UTC)It's hard to say whether Janni or Bill/Tom are my favorite about this, really. I like them both so much.

Date: 2009-08-14 05:46 am (UTC)A vampire, huh? LOL Um, why?
That makes me really happy, because we all usually enjoy Bill and Tom, but I think it's a little more difficult to write an OC that people like. I'm glad you enjoy her! Thank you. <333

Date: 2009-08-14 05:57 am (UTC)Janni is a hell of a character, really, particularly for a kid so young. She gives the impression of the type of kid that just... questions all the time.
I love kids, though, so I'd be hard-pressed not to adore her character. She lends a measure of wacky fun to the fic. Children's innocence tends to feel like that. C:

It's just so wonderful to me that she seems so real to you and I'm really proud of her. Thank you for telling me that. <3

Date: 2009-08-14 06:36 am (UTC)But in her opinion vampires drink blood with a straw ^_^
O.M.G. I love this chapter. Janni is so awesome. Why can't adults be more like children some times? I feared Tom would get fired there and then after saying that Bill was his partner D:
Take care of them, will you =3

Date: 2009-08-22 08:32 pm (UTC)You're setting up more pieces in the latest chapter for something potentially horrible, and I really don't know if I'm just going to wait and see how it ends, before I read more. (Yeah, I'm that pathetic ;-P)
I want my boys safe and happy. It's okay, if there are obstacles for them to get there, but if there are, I want to know they can overcome them.

Date: 2009-08-14 03:34 pm (UTC)Though I am rather proud of Tom standing up for his relationship with Bill, I'm internally cringing at how it will be accepted. I’m scared as hell for Janni and for Tom’s professional future. Guh, I won’t know what to do with myself when this story ends xD

Date: 2009-08-16 07:36 am (UTC)How do you do this? Once again, I just want to go and throw away anything that I have written.
You know just the right way of saying things to get all the feelings and emotions expressed perfectly. I was all ready to smack Simone upside the head, but really, her behaviour was just being a caring, concerned mother and grandmother.
Janni was terrific. The boys are panicking but she's a typical kid, blowing over a situation that an adult would be stressing over.
Hopefully, this grocery store encounter will not cause too many problems for the boys, but hey, bring on the angst, I've got big shoulders and I'm dying to see how you handle this situation.
A wonderful present to come home to. Thanks so much for this.

Date: 2009-08-22 07:53 am (UTC)Oh, back to what I was doing. Don't you be throwing anything away that you've written! ._.
Yep, that's the thing; Janni is really too young to understand what's going on, and not having been in school very long, she hasn't been exposed so much to other kids making disparaging remarks about gay people and 'fags'. As far as she knows, Daddy just sleeps with Bill, no big deal. :)
Aw, you're welcome. I missed you so while you were gone, I was glad this was here for you when you came back. Thank you so, so very much for the kind words. yet again, you'll never know how much I appreciate them. <3333

Date: 2009-08-16 09:07 pm (UTC)“Bill is just your friend that sleeps with you, right?” lmfao, I so have to steal that line: "No, Alina's not her girlfriend, she's just Mary's friend that Mary sleeps with."
Great chapter though I have the unhappy feeling that Mr. Shasky might withdraw his marketing proposal. *wince*

Date: 2009-08-30 09:38 am (UTC)I love that Tom is so proud of Bill, but I have a feeling that he is going to have trouble at work now. It's so sad too because they were so cute acting all couple like in the store. I love that he actually called Bill his partner.
Janni cracked me up in this one. She's so innocent, but kids just say whatever is in their heads. I could just picture my niece saying something like that and she is always so loud when she does that stuff. I do love how comfortable she is with Bill though and that he is comfortable with her too.
I'm afraid of them having trouble now seeing two different people changed their attitudes when they saw Bill and Tom together. I love this story, but I just want to whisk them away to a more understanding city :(
