Tom woke to Janni shaking his arm and chanting in his ear, “Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, Daddy…”
He opened one eye and tried to focus. It was bright in the room and he blinked hard.

“What?” He yawned widely. “What’s up, little girl?”

“Isn’t it breakfast time yet?”

Tom frowned and looked at the alarm clock. “Shit!”

Janni frowned, as well. “Daddy, you’re not supposed to—“ she started, but Tom was already throwing the covers back and reaching for a pair of jeans.

“Go get dressed quick; we gotta go.” Janni stared at him in confusion. “Right now, Janni! We’re late for school!” He nudged Janni out the bedroom door with a hand on her shoulder and lunged for the dresser drawer where his tee shirts were folded.

He could hear Janni’s footsteps running to her room and he quickly finished getting dressed before running down the stairs to grab half a bagel for her and to throw his shoes on. Janni still hadn’t made an appearance by the time Tom was ready to go and he called her name from the bottom of the stairs.

“Janni! Let’s go!” He waited for a moment but when he didn’t hear anything, he cursed again and went up after her. He found her in her room, opening and closing dresser drawers, getting more and more frustrated. “What are you doing?”

“I can’t find my kitty shirt.” She opened another drawer and quickly closed it, not spying the pink shirt with the big, fluffy kitty on it.

“Wear a different shirt then; we need to go!” Tom pulled open the drawer she’d just closed and pulled out a cute little peasant shirt, holding it up to her.

She pushed it away and made a face. “But I don’t want that one. I only want my kitty shirt. Where’s my kitty shirt?”

“Janni.” His frustration level was getting pretty high and he was ready to strip the nightgown off of her and throw the clothes on her, himself. “We don’t have time to look for your kitty shirt right now. We can look later and you can wear it tomorrow. Just put this one on and let’s go!”

Janni stopped searching and stood looking at him, tears filling her eyes. “But I only want my kitty shirt.” One tear dropped and another trickled down her cheek before her face crumpled and she stood sobbing in her nightgown.

Tom muttered a curse under his breath and gathered her up in his arms, sitting on the bed with Janni in his lap. He rocked her for a moment. “You know we can’t find the kitty shirt.”

She hummed sadly, “Mhm.”

“You know we’re late for school.”

“Mhm.”

“If we’re late for school, the teacher gets upset, doesn’t she?” Tom wiped away her tears and pulled back, making her take her face out of Tom's, now wet, neck. She nodded.

“So let’s not make her any more upset. How about if you put on that shirt and you can wear the purple hat with it? You like that hat,” he offered, hoping like hell that she’d go with the compromise so they could finally get out of there.

Janni glanced over at the purple cap that hung from her bed post. “Daddy, we can’t wear hats in school, ‘member?” She sniffled.

“Damn.” Tom thought quick, looking toward the door, “Okay, then, what about if I let you wear my purple bandana. It’s my favorite, remember?”

Janni stopped sniffling. “But you said I couldn’t—“

“I know, but it’s just for today, until we can find your kitty shirt. Think you wanna do that?” Tom tried to sound calm but he was desperate for her to accept the deal so they could get out of there.

She seemed to consider for a long moment before she reluctantly climbed down from Tom's lap. “Okay,” she shrugged.

“Good!” Tom ran to his room, grabbed the bandana out of his top drawer and turned to find her standing right behind him. He sat on the bed quickly and, motioned her over and tied the bandana in a thick knot at the nape of her neck. “Okay. Ready?”

Janni gave him a watery smile and nodded, taking Tom's hand on the way out the door.

A short car ride later and Tom had Janni by the hand and was leading her in through the entry doors and to her classroom. They knocked on the door when they got there and Janni’s teacher answered, looking as unhappy as Tom thought she would.

“I’m sorry we’re late. I kinda…just—“ Tom stammered; having the teacher look at him like this was just like being back in school, and he winced.

“I understand, Mr. Kaulitz. Try to be on time from now on, please.” With a nod, she closed the door and Tom was left standing outside of it, feeling like a loser.

“Damnit,” he whispered under his breath.

On the way out, he walked by the cafeteria and remembered that Janni was low on lunch money. He figured since he was at the school already, he might as well put some money in the account. He doubled back to the cashier window, dug his checkbook out of his pocket and started writing a check to cover lunch for the next two weeks.

With his mind on Janni and why she was so grumpy this morning, it took a moment to notice the whispering behind him. He turned to find the source and found three women standing by the office door. One was Heather’s mom, Sherry, and the other two, he only knew by sight. They were taking turns casting glances in his direction and whispering to each other quietly. His stomach dropped.

He turned back and finished writing his check, paid the cashier and shoved the checkbook back in his pocket. He didn’t really want to walk by the gossip queens, but this door was closest to him and closest to where he’d parked his car. It’d be stupid to go out another door, so Tom walked purposefully toward the one by the office.

As he reached the women, he nodded. “’Morning, ladies.” He tried to give them a smile, but it felt more like a grimace on his face and he reached for the door, trying to get out of there quickly.

“Mr. Kaulitz,” Sherry replied with a cold look and a nod.

Tom raised a brow. He opened his mouth to speak, to call her out on her nastiness but he closed it again when he realized that there was no point. He couldn’t change her any more than he could change anyone in the town. Tom pushed the door open slowly and stepped out into the sunlight. He took a deep breath of fresh air and started toward his car.

What made me think that they’d be any different toward me? Tom thought. Because he’d grown up there? Would people he’d known his whole life suddenly begin to treat him differently because of his sexuality?

It doesn’t matter if they do, Tom thought. He was determined that their attitudes wouldn’t change things, they wouldn’t change his life. He wasn’t going to hide who he was anymore, and he wasn’t going to hide Bill. Whatever happened, he would take it and he would handle it and he wasn’t going to let them stop him from being with the man he loved.

He got in the car and shut the door carefully, putting his seat belt on and thinking about how he really wanted to call Bill. He really wanted to hear Bill’s voice.

~~~
Tom had been sitting at his desk, scrolling through images and trying to find just the right one for the cover of Mr. Shasky’s book and he wasn’t having any luck. He wanted to get one more image lined up to show Mr. Shasky for his big proposal, but he needed that picture to pull it all together and he just couldn’t find it. Part of the problem might have been that his mind wasn’t really on his work. His mind was on a sexy bartender, and how good Bill looked without his clothes and how he smelled and felt and Tom groaned in frustration. He palmed his half-hard cock through his jeans and got up to get some water.
Just as he finished off the glass of water, the phone rang. Setting the glass on the counter, he answered it quickly, thinking it could be Shasky’s office, calling to set up an appointment for his presentation. He gave his standard business greeting with butterflies in his belly. The voice that replied, though, was not one he expected.
”Tomas? This is Angelica,” his former mother-in-law said, curtly, and Tom cringed at the name and at the tone. “Francis and I are coming back to town and we would like to see Janni as soon as possible.”
Tom sighed quietly. Angelica and Francis were snowbirds and spent six months out of the year in their second home in Vermont. Once it started to get cold up there, they bee-lined for their home here in town. And they always wanted to see Janni right away. He tried not to mind, tried to remember that Angelica was her grandmother, but sometimes it was hard to be patient. Angelica was never discourteous, she just wanted her way and she wanted it now.
“That’s fine, Angelica. When will you be here?”
”The end of the week. I’d like to have her with us for the whole weekend, as we are expected to join the family for a recital.”
Tom quickly pulled up the calendar on his computer. “We don’t have anything scheduled; I think that should be fine. So you will be here Friday evening to get her?”
”Please have her packed, and make sure she has nice clothes with her this time, would you?” Tom could hear her sniff over the phone. ”Last time she was with us, her clothing was a mess and we had to buy her all new outfits.”
Squinting his eyes at no one, Tom's reply was clipped. “I’ll see what I can do. We’ll see you on Friday.” He hung up quickly and plopped onto the couch, leaning his head back and sighing again. “Ugh.”
The doorbell rang and Tom looked over at the door; he wasn’t expecting anyone. “You’ve gotta be kidding me.” He just wanted to wallow in the self-pity he was feeling about Angelica coming back, but it was obvious that he wasn’t going to get to now. A sharp, continuous knock followed the doorbell and Tom pushed himself off the couch with a grunt. “Hang on! I’ll be right there.”
Bill stood on the other side of the door, his grin so bright and beautiful that Tom was momentarily stunned into silence. In that brief moment, standing in Bill’s glow, the tension that had been building all day began to flow out of him. With a sigh of relief, he stepped back, opening the door wider.
“Hi.” Bill stepped over the threshold and right into Tom's arms. He was warm and smelled so good when Tom nuzzled into his neck, dropping a kiss there.
“Hi.” Tom pulled away and grabbed Bill’s hand, tugging him lightly toward the living room. “You can just come in, you know. Don’t bother with knocking.”
Bill stood by the couch as Tom went to his computer and saved the pages he’d been looking at. “Okay,” he said, still smiling. “I didn’t realize you were working.”
“Trying to work. I wasn’t getting very far.” Tom shrugged. “So what’s up? You look like you’re ready to burst.”
Bill’s grin only widened and he grabbed Tom by the wrist, dragged him over to the couch and pushed him down on it. Tom landed with an “oomph” and Bill wasted no time in climbing into his lap, straddling his legs.
Tom sat back and waited, not knowing what Bill was going to do, but, if it started from this position, he was game. Whatever Bill wanted, Bill would get. He stroked his hands up and down Bill’s denim-clad thighs and under his tee shirt until his settled them on sharp, exposed hipbones. He dipped his thumbs into the valley between Bill’s hips and his groin and Bill closed his eyes for a moment, a moan on his breath.
“God, that’s good.” Bill held on to Tom's shoulders and leaned down to kiss Tom's forehead. “But stop a minute. Just…a minute.”
Tom smirked and moved his hands back to Bill’s thighs. “Just a minute?”
Bill reached into his back pocket and pulled out an envelope. It had been opened and was somewhat crinkled from being in Bill’s pocket, but Tom could see it looked official. “Oh, you’ll be glad you did. Did you get your mail today?”
“No, why?” Now Tom was confused.
“Is it here?”
“It might be. The mailman could have come and I didn’t notice. Why, Bill?” Bill got off his lap and went for the door. Tom stayed where he was, wondering what on earth Bill was up to. What would be in the mail for him? And why would Bill care?
And then he remembered. The test. The test results. That must have been what Bill was holding. He jumped up from the couch and got to the door just as Bill was coming back in with a handful of letters.
“The test results. You got your test results, didn’t you?” Tom reached for the stack of letters and Bill handed them over as they hurried back to the couch.
As soon as Tom sat back down, Bill resumed his position in Tom's lap, almost bouncing with anticipation and making Tom laugh. He pulled out his envelope again and unfolded the paper that was inside. “This came this morning. Have a look.”
Tom put down his letters and took the paper Bill held out. It was from the clinic. He skimmed over the header and the Dear Mr. Trümper and got right to the meat of the letter.
Negative
Tom's smile matched Bill’s then and Bill kissed him hard until Tom was breathless and he dropped the letter on the couch.
Bill sat up and handed Tom his stack of mail. “I took the afternoon off because of this. I hope yours came!” Tom took it and rifled through until he found the envelope with the same letterhead as Bill’s letter. He pulled it out and dropped the rest in their laps.
He held the envelope in his hands, examining it. It was smooth and white and official and Tom was a little nervous to open it. He’d never been tested before but since he hadn’t fooled around since Nikki, and he hadn’t really been sick, he was sure there really was no way he could be positive. That didn’t stop the slight sick feeling he had in his belly.
“Come on, Tom,” Bill urged, his fingers clenching slightly on the tee shirt covering Tom's chest, “Open it.”
Tom held his breath, slid his finger under the flap of the envelope and opened it slowly.
I swear to God if you make him positive I will have to beat you with a blunt object. Or cry. Really, really bad and you will feel so guilty you'll have to rewrite it. D
If Tom's positive for something icky, poor little Janni might be, too. :C And plus, Bill! Oh, no.
“Mr. Kaulitz,” Sherry replied with a cold look and a nod.
Bitch. God, am I glad my parents always taught me to say fuck 'em and leave 'em, because that shit hurts. I really don't understand why people are like that but, for all it's worth, it's hard to ignore. But I'm so glad 'Negative' was about the test results and not Mr. Shasky's cover work because Tom surely doesn't need that on top of what he's already got.
Wonderful chapter, even if I don't advocate sex in the workplace (too many people looking for gossip). :>
Aaargh! No, not to the cliff-hanger (I'll get to that in a sec), but to the whole thing with the f-ing 'kitty' shirt!!!! You don't know how many times I had to argue and make deals with Nigel for that very reason. That child drove me insane some days. I totally felt Tom's frustration over that. Man, you had that pegged perfectly!
Okay, now back to the rest. That bitch at the school, or rather bitches, all of them, teacher included, should be strung up. How dare they judge Tom. I am not looking forward to the mother-in-law scene that I know you must have waiting in the wings. That won't be a pretty sight. *cringe*
And Bill!! Just climbing into Tom's lap and all but vibrating while he waits for Tom to open his letter. Oh to have a Bill vibrator (I know, I know, I've seen it, too)!
Awesome, wonderful, yada yada, add all the other descriptive words I use, from time to time.
I think you can really tell the authors that try to write kids, who actually have them. I swear, that scene could have happened on any day in my house several years ago. Only I generally wasn't as sweet as Tom about it! LOL
Bill vibrator. Dear gods. I cannot be thinking about this at work! LOL <3
Bill's excitement at getting his results is just adorable, he's like a kid standing with his nose pressed against the window of a candy store, with the hope of being allowed in LOL *crosses fingers for Tom*
D: HOW RUDE! lol
We finally get to see the other side of Tom's parenting. I loved how frazzled he was when he realized that Janni was late for school. It always amazes me how real you manage to make your characters. And how sweet was it that Bill came over just when Tom was about to Hulk out and flip a couch over? If only we were all that fortunate lol
I'm so nervous about the grandparents coming for a visit.
Nooooooo. Omg this chapter killed me. As soon as Tom talked to his mother in law I got all those bad feelings again. There is no way a snooty woman like that is going to accept Bill. She better not start anything. Then the whole letter came and I was thinking ohhhh hot sex and it just stopped lol. He can't be positive. I'll be so sad.
Ok now that I can think coherently. I again loved Tom and Janni's together. It's just so cute how he tries to please her. I am always left thinking what a great dad he is. I wanted to smack those women at the school. I just hate people like that. They are not only close minded, but so catty and just the type of women that give us all a bad name.
I felt for Tom when he was working. I think whenever you wake up late you are feel like you are trying to catch up all day. I was a bit worried that he hadn't heard from his boss yet, but was so excited when Bill arrived. I think the fact that he thinks of Bill when he needs comfort or reassurance is a good thing. I also loved that he was so sure he could deal with anything that came up if Bill was with him. Really makes their relationship feel like it's right for him seeing the easy thing would be to just run. Can't wait for more. I'll be worrying about the letter until then lol.
