“Did you pick the heaviest couch they had, Bill?” Georg grunted as he lifted his end of Bill’s couch and waited for Gustav to get a good hold on the other end. He backed awkwardly to the door and hoisted the end higher.
“The furniture place moved it in for me. I’ve never even moved it across the room.” Bill danced around them, wanting to help but not sure how he could.
Gustav glanced back at him and looked him up and down. “I’m not sure you could move it across the room.”
“Hey!” Bill protested with a grin, finally landing in one spot. “That’s unnecessary and completely untrue.”
Tom came up behind them, carrying a big box of cds. “Don’t underestimate him; he’s stronger than he looks.”
Bill smiled gratefully and leaned around the box in Tom's arms to kiss his cheek. “Thank you.”
“Oh, no,” Tom laughed, “I have an ulterior motive here.” He dumped the box of cds in Bill’s arms and Bill caught them with an ‘oomph’. “Now you can’t say these are too heavy for you. Let’s get crackin’.”
Tom winked before jogging back to the moving van, leaving Bill staring after him with his mouth hanging open and Gustav and Georg snorting in amusement. Before Bill could say anything in rebuttal, he felt a tapping on his hip.
“Bill…Bill!” Janni patted Bill on the leg. “What can I move? I can help, too.” She looked up at him with big eyes, so eager to help, but there really was nothing for her to do. They were almost done anyway. The house was a disaster area, but they would be done before long, then they’d have a chance to get everything sorted out and figure what went where.
Bill winced. He didn’t want to tell her she couldn’t do anything because the only things left were big items. Finally, he hit on an idea.
“Okay, I’ve got something. It isn’t moving but you’d be helping. Wanna do it?” Bill tried to sound enthusiastic.
Janni looked at him skeptically. “I dunno; what is it?”
“Just moving towels. You can move towels, right?” Janni nodded with a grin. “Good,” Bill continued. “I brought some towels here from my old apartment, just to have a little more. They should be in a box in the bathroom, already folded. Will you put them in with your towels, please?”
Janni nodded. “I can do that.”
“Off with you, then.” Bill nodded toward the door and watched in amusement as she tried to get around Georg, Gustav and Bill’s monster of a couch. Finally, she ducked under it and weaved around Georg's legs before running through the house.
“Should have told her to go around the back.” Tom came up behind him, carrying Bill’s nightstand. He didn’t sound upset but Bill felt a little guilty, anyway. He hadn’t even thought that it might not be the best idea for Janni to try to go around their friends while they were packing such a heavy load.
“That wasn’t so smart, I guess,” he answered, blushing. “I think I have a lot to learn.”
With a grunt and a scrape on the door jamb that sounded very unhealthy for the paint, Gustav and Georg finally maneuvered the couch into the house. Bill and Tom followed them in, setting boxes in the entry until they could be unpacked later.
“You’ll be fine, Bill. You’re still really new at this.” Tom grinned and wound his arms around Bill’s neck, pulling him flush against his chest. “You’ll get used to thinking like a parent.”
Bill chest constricted. Thinking like a parent. A parent.
He’d thought of this, of course. But it’s different thinking about becoming Janni’s parent when you’re sitting all the way across town and you’re not telling her to run in the house underneath a heavy couch that could land on her head.
Tom must have read the thoughts on his face, because he brushed his nose against Bill’s and whispered, “You’ll be fine. Don’t worry so much.”
Bill laughed quietly against Tom's lips before Tom kissed him slowly, reassuringly, and Bill melted against him.
“Tomas.” Anjelica’s cold voice from the doorway startled them and Bill and Tom jumped apart, guiltily. Bill took another step back and wrapped his arms around himself, not knowing what to do with them.
The woman who stood in the doorway was tiny. She was tiny, her hair grey, deep lines on her face, but she had the biggest presence that Bill had ever seen. Considering his time and the people he’d known in New York, that was saying something. Her eyes were as icy as her voice and she swept them over Bill, taking in everything from the loose beanie on his head to the worn tennis shoes on his feet. He would have sworn her nose wrinkled slightly before she turned her attention away from Bill and on to Tom.
“Where is my granddaughter?” She crossed her arms over her chest and Tom looked at Bill, his eyes wide.
“I sent her upstairs to put towels away,” Bill supplied and Tom nodded to Anjelica.
“Upstairs, then.” Tom looked terrified and Bill stepped closer to him, wanting to comfort him, but everything about Tom's body language told him to stay back. He wrapped his arms tighter around himself and took a deep breath.
“And is she ready to go with us?” She cocked her head and Tom grimaced.
“No. No, she’s not. I completely forgot you were coming, what with the moving and—“
“Then you should go get her, Tomas. I’m certainly not going to try to negotiate this mess.” She eyed the living room with disdain.
“Right.” Tom looked at Bill blankly before turning toward the stairs. “I’ll get her. Be right back.”
Bill watched him flee, because that’s exactly what he did; flee. He didn’t think he’d ever seen Tom look that uncomfortable before and he looked at Janni’s grandmother, waiting.
The silence in the entry was uncomfortable but there was no way Bill was going to try to make small talk; this woman would eat him alive. He’d be scared to death he’d say the wrong thing. That generally wasn’t Bill at all, but this woman was frightening.
And then she changed in an instant. Janni came bounding down the steps and picked her way delicately through the mess that used to be the living room and dining room.
“Hi, Grandma!” A smile grew on Anjelica’s thin lips, showing her teeth, perfect and white. She held her arms open and Janni threw herself into them, leaning back to kiss her grandma on the cheek.
“Hello, my darling girl,” Anjelica cooed. “Let’s have a look at you, shall we?” She put Janni at arm’s length and held her there, taking in Janni’s jeans with the grass stains on the knees and shirt with a smear of grape kool-aid on the sleeve where Janni had wiped her lips earlier. “Well, you have grown since I saw you last! But Janni, why do you insist on wearing old, ratty clothes?”
“These aren’t old or ratty,” Janni answered, looking down at her own clothing, a frown of confusion on her face.
“Hm, well. Go change so we can go.” She nudged Janni toward the stairs before turning back to Tom, coming down the stairs with a backpack. “I hope I don’t have to replace her clothes this time, Tomas.”
Bill’s eyes widened at her tone and he wasn’t surprised to see Tom's jaw clenching as he struggled to keep his temper under control.
“Tom, you want a beer? We’re almost out, but I can make a run if you think—“ Coming out of the kitchen, Georg stopped dead when he saw Tom had company. “Oh! Sorry, didn’t mean to interrupt.” He handed the open beer to Tom and wiped his hand on the ass of his pants before holding it out to Anjelica. “I’m Georg, a friend of Tom and Bill. Good to meet you.”
She stared at him like he was a bug. Bill watched her look him up and down and she cocked a brow at him. Moving furniture was hard, sweaty work and he had taken his shirt off, even though it was almost cold enough to snow outside. She put out her hand and shook his briskly, as if she just wanted to be polite and get the introduction over. “Anjelica, Janni’s grandmother.”
“Well, um. Tom, I’m gonna go…find out what Gustav is doing. Yeah.” Georg backed away, flicking an unsure glance at Tom before nodding and disappearing around the corner into the kitchen, nearly running into Janni, bounding down the stairs.
“Is this good enough, Grandma?” Janni did a little twirl in front of Anjelica, showing off her new tee shirt and jeans with colorful suspenders.
“Yes, I think that’ll do.” She held her hand out for Janni’s bag and Tom handed it over. “We’ll see you in a few days, Tomas.”
He nodded and suddenly found himself tackled by an excited Janni. She clung to his legs and he set his beer on a box, leaned down and scooped her up, hugging her hard and kissing her cheeks. “You be good. Don’t make your grandma upset, okay?”
Janni giggled at him, “I’m always good!”
Tom scoffed. “Yeah, okay. Just…I love you, little girl. Have fun, okay?”
“Okay, Daddy. Let me go now.” Janni pushed against his shoulders and wiggled, trying to get down and he let her, reluctantly, and followed her outside.
Janni got into her grandparent’s big car and climbed into the car seat, and Anjelica buckled it for her before they backed out of the driveway. Father and daughter waved at each other, and Tom continued to wave for a moment even after they’d turned the corner and he couldn’t see her anymore.
Bill wrapped his arms around him from behind, resting his chin on Tom's shoulder and holding him tightly. Tom's fingers settled over his and he sighed deeply.
“Is she always like that?” Bill asked, leaning his forehead into Tom's hair.
“No, not quite that bad,” Tom replied, dropping his head back on Bill’s shoulder. “I think it’s because she saw us.”
Bill hummed. There was nothing he could say to that. He couldn’t deny it and there was no reassurance he could give Tom because it could very well have been true. Some people are just rude to people whose behavior they don’t approve of and Bill knew it. Hell, he’d been on the receiving end of it more than once. He’d just hoped that they wouldn’t have to deal with someone close being homophobic.
He kissed the side of Tom's neck, letting his lips linger for just a moment, before murmuring against them, “Well, the bright side is that Janni is away for the weekend and we have time to get all this stuff sorted out.”
“Yeah,” Tom sighed again before turning in Bill’s arms and kissing him lightly. “And maybe get to a few other things.” He pulled away with a glint in his eye and Bill’s belly twisted. Tom walked around him and into the house and Bill blew out a shaky sigh of anticipation before following him in.
“Am I too late to help?” Simone poked her head into the kitchen and Tom jerked up, bumping his head on the cupboard door. “Oops. Didn’t mean to scare you.” She brought in several bulging bags from a local fast food place and set them on the counter.
“It’s okay.” Tom rubbed his head, wincing. “It’s just been a long day. And you brought food! Do you even know how much I love you right now?” He hugged her hard and breathed in. The relief he felt in seeing her right now had nothing to do with food and everything to do with her being Mom. He took in her scent and it calmed him, conjuring images of bedtime stories and baking cookies and Christmas and skinned knee hugs. He was so glad she was here, because right now, he felt like more than his knee was skinned, and he really needed her hug.
“Hey.” Simone looked up at him with concern, squeezing his shoulders. “Something going on?” She looked around. “Where’s Janni?”
Tom didn’t want to tell her. He didn’t want to tell her what a bitch Anjelica had been. He didn’t want to tell her that the reason Anjelica had been such a bitch was because she’d seen him and Bill kissing in the entry. Simone didn’t like Anjelica to begin with and this would only serve to fuel her animosity. He pulled out of her arms and turned to the plates he had been rearranging in the cupboard.
“Nothing’s going on. Okay, that’s not true. Anjelica and Francis were here earlier and took Janni for the weekend.”
“Oh?” Simone started opening the bags of food, the contents no longer steaming and fresh, but the scent made Tom's mouth water anyway.
“Well, Francis stayed in the car.” Tom shrugged, grabbing another beer out of the fridge and offering it to Simone. He was glad he’d taken Georg up on his offer to make a beer run; he’d definitely needed it.
“He was probably relishing a few quiet moments away from Anjelica.” Tom snorted and Simone set the sandwiches and fries out before taking a long swig of her beer.
“Yeah, well. She was…in a mood.” Tom stuffed a fry into his mouth and decided if he was going to eat lukewarm fries, he needed ketchup. Grabbing it from the fridge, he went to the bottom of the stairs and called up that supper had arrived. He waited to hear the ‘Okay!’ from Bill before joining Simone in the kitchen again. “She walked in the door right as Bill and I were…” Tom paused, his face heating up. How could he have gotten to this age and still feel embarrassed talking to his mom about kissing someone?
“You were…” Simone prompted, ducking her head to hide behind her hair. Tom knew the trick; Bill pulled it all the time. She was laughing at him and he hip checked her lightly.
“Dammit, we were kissing. Okay?” She snickered in answer.
“Whatever, Tomas” she grinned at him, making fun of the name Anjelica called him and Tom winced.
“Don’t do that,” he protested as Bill came down the stairs, sniffing.
“Hi, Simone.” Bill greeted her with a tentative smile, stopping at the entry to the kitchen. “Thank you for bringing dinner. That was very thoughtful of you.”
Simone smiled back, a twinkle in her eye and Tom smirked and crossed his arms, waiting. She held a sandwich out to Bill. “Well, hello, Bill. You want grilled chicken with tomato?”
When Bill nodded and came forward to take the sandwich, Simone grabbed his arm and laughingly pulled him in for a hug. “C’mere, idiot. Give me a hug.”
Bill looked at Tom over the top of Simone’s red curls and grinned at him before Simone pushed away from him and thrust the sandwich into his hands. “And for the record,” Simone looked at Bill seriously, “I’m glad you’re here.” She grabbed another sandwich and a bag of fries from the counter. “I’ll meet you both in the dining room….if I can find it,” she said wryly.
As soon as Simone left the kitchen, Bill plucked a fry off out of a bag and tossed it at Tom. “Why didn’t you warn me your mom was a hugger?” he laughed.
Tom got beers out of the fridge for the two of them and opened them before handing one to Bill and collecting his own food. “More interesting if you found out for yourself.”
“Hm, well,” Bill started, stopping Tom before he could escape with his grub, “I have an idea for later that you might find interesting.” Bill’s eyes focused on Tom's lips and Tom gulped at the gleam in them.
“Oh, yeah?” Tom's eyes widened. He had no idea what Bill was up to, but his breath caught in his throat and his dick twitched just knowing Bill was thinking about it.
“Yeah.” Bill nodded and kissed him quickly, sucking Tom's bottom lip in between his and tonguing his lip ring. “I want to try something new.”
Bill grabbed his sandwich and his beer, winking at Tom as he went to join Simone in the dining room, leaving Tom standing in the kitchen with cold fries and a hard cock.

Date: 2009-10-11 06:54 pm (UTC)To me, this chapter brought out all the support systems. Georg and Gustav helping with the moving and being best friends. Bill making sure Janni felt included and being there for Tom with his confrontation with Anjelica and his hints at things to come that night. And Simone showing up with food and making Bill feel included in the family.
All these things just brought the story together and gave me a better sense of how the characters were support systems for each other.
Okay, I'll be shutting up now, because this is probably making you go all 'wtf' is she ranting about. I loved it, as usual!

Date: 2009-10-20 11:20 pm (UTC)Anjelica is such a bitch. I can't believe how terrible she is. She worries me every time she is around. It was amazing how tense the room got when she arrived. I hate how she basically turns Tom into a little boy who just got caught doing something wrong. I am so worried she will ruin their relationship :(
I absolutely love Simone. I was worried at the beginning of the story that she was going to be terrible to Bill, but she is such a doll. I laughed as she teased Tom and turned him back into a teenager caught kissing. I'm just so glad she is accepting of the move and Bill in general.
