The house was quiet, right in those moments before the sun would rise completely over the horizon and cold light would filter into their bedroom through the gaps in the curtain. Tom stirred and woke, holding his eyes shut for just a few more minutes.

Bill was curled around him, his chest flush and sweaty against Tom's side, their legs tangled under the thick comforter. He’d groaned when Tom moved and tightened the arm that was thrown over Tom's belly.

“Don’t wanna,” he murmured into Tom's neck, and Tom hummed in return. He was lying here with Bill, with no worries and nothing pressing, and he felt…peaceful.

Until the loud, staccato rapping on the door.

“Daddy! Bill! Can I come in?”

“Nooo, it’s too early.” Bill patted at Tom's chest, his eyes screwed shut as he slid away from Tom and ducked his head under his pillow, pulling it tightly over his ears. “Tell her it’s too early. Come back later,” he grumbled, voice muffled.

“Yeah, right. You know she won’t go for it.” Tom snorted. “Come in, Janni,” he called, and the door burst open, bouncing off the wall behind it as Janni barreled toward their bed. She grinned manically, and clutching Brownie, she clambered over the side of the bed and jumped toward the middle. Bill grunted and squawked as Janni’s shins caught him mid-back and she landed between them on her knees, bouncing in place.

“Hi,” Tom said, not bothering to hold back his grin.

“Hi!” Janni chirped. “Guess what today is!”

“Ummm,” Tom glanced at Bill, who was just peeking one eye from beneath the pillow. “Umm, well. I don’t know, you tell me.”

“Noo, Daddy, guess!” She bounced some more, poking at Bill’s side. “Bill, you guess. What day is it?”

“Sleeping day!” Bill answered immediately , winking at her and diving back under his pillow.

“No! You guys!” Janni protested, bouncing harder and shaking Brownie for emphasis. “Today is Christmas this morning!”

Tom gave her the most shocked face her could muster this early in the morning.

“Christmas?” he breathed. “Today. Today is Christmas?” Tom shook Bill’s shoulder frantically. “Bill! Today is Christmas!”

Bill threw his pillow off the bed and sat up, excitedly looking at Tom. “Christmas? Today? Right now?” He swung his head and looked at Janni. “No way, really?”

Janni giggled and grabbed at Bill’s hand. “Of course it’s Christmas, you silly! Let’s go downstairs and see what Santa brought.” Janni said breathlessly, her eyes going wide as if she only just remembered about Santa and his red suit and reindeers and big, magical sack full of presents.

“Okay, okay,” Bill kissed her hand dramatically and let it go. “You go downstairs and check out the haul under the tree. Daddy and I will get dressed and be right down. Okay?”

“Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!” Janni jumped off the bed with a flying leap, landed on a run and tore out of the bedroom.

“And we’re having coffee first!” Tom called after her, sure that she hadn’t heard him.

Bill and Tom looked at each other and could only grin.

“Yeah, this is gonna be fun,” Tom said, leaning into the arm that Bill wrapped around his shoulders, kissing him tenderly.

“Mhm,” Bill hummed against Tom's lips. “This is already fun. Sure we couldn’t lock the door and steal another half hour alone?” Bill’s fingers skimmed lightly over Tom's back.

Bill’s words and touch had blood moving swiftly to Tom's groin and he groaned, moving out of Bill’s reach and getting up, grabbing a tee shirt from the second drawer.

“Come on, baby. Let’s go do this.” He held out his hand and Bill took it, pulled back the covers and got out of bed with a dramatic sigh.

“Okay, if we must,” Bill’s lips twitched, but in the end, he couldn’t hold back his grin, either.

~~~
Tom downed the last of his coffee and set the mug aside as he scooted to the edge of his chair just as a sheet of wrinkled wrapping paper came flying at him. He dodged it, laughing, “Slow down there, Janni girl. The presents aren’t going anywhere, you know.”
Janni didn’t answer and Tom wasn’t even sure she heard him, anyway. She’d torn through the presents Simone had just brought and ripped her way through the ones from Bill and Tom, and was now digging into the couple that were labeled ‘From Santa!’
“Is it…? Is it…?” Janni frantically opened the box that had been under all that paper and dug her hand inside. “YES!” She squealed. “Yes, yes, yes, yes!” She pulled out the doll she’d seen on television, the one that cried and talked and ate and pooped; the one that Janni had been pining over for months. Tom had looked at Bill like he was a complete loon for wanting to buy her that for Christmas, but Bill wouldn’t be talked out of it. Finally, with the declaration that Bill would be the one to help Janni change the damn doll’s diapers, Tom relented. Bill had veritably glowed when he’d come home with the doll.
He glowed then as Janni glowed now, pulling the doll out of its box and trying desperately to unhook all the little twist ties hooking the doll to the cardboard it was tethered to.
“Daddy?” She brought the doll to his chair and he leaned back again, giving her a place to perch on his lap while he worked to free the doll. Caught up in his task, he didn’t even hear the knock on the door.
“I’ll get it,” Simone called from the kitchen, where she’d been dressing the bird they would have for Christmas dinner.
Tom and Bill looked up just as Gustav and Georg came in, booming a ‘hello’ and ‘Merry Christmas’. Georg was grinning from ear to ear as he carried in a large box, wrapped with bright red and orange paper dotted with black spots.
Forgetting about her doll, Janni slid immediately from Tom's lap and sidled over to where Georg put the box down by the Christmas tree, pushing used wrapping paper and bows aside.
“So…who’s that for?” She asked, tilting her head and looking up at Georg.
“Hm,” Georg hummed and poked at the tag on the top of the box as he squatted next to it. “Maybe we should check the tag.”
Janni peered at the little, white strip of paper taped to the big, red bow on the top of the box.
“It says ‘Janni’ on it. So it’s for me!” Janni crowed and grabbed at the edges of the box, looking for a place to dig in and rip the paper off, when suddenly, the box moved. It moved around and jiggled in place and Janni squeaked and jumped sideways, half hiding behind Georg when she came to a stop. “What’s that? What’s in there?” Her voice was full of trepidation and a little bit of wonder, and she held steadfast to Georg's arm for safety.
Little snuffly sounds came from inside the box and it wiggled again, punctuated by a muffled ‘yip!’
Janni looked up at the audience of family surrounding her, her eyes wide as it dawned on her what was inside the box. Her mouth formed a tight ‘o’ and then split into a wide grin.
“Puppies! There are puppies in the box!” Janni zoomed around Georg and started ripping paper as quickly as she could. “There are puppies in the box! Daddy, puppies!”
Tom shushed her with a finger to his lips. “Listen.” He reached over and stilled her hands. “Are you sure that’s even what’s in there? Could be something completely different and no fun at all.” He looked at her sideways, and she shot a look at Bill, who nodded solemnly.
Janni raised an eyebrow, so reminiscent of Bill that Tom almost lost his composure. “Daddy. Bill. There are puppies in that box.” She pointed at the box to emphasize her stern words. “And I need to get them out of there.”
Tom did laugh then and let go of her hands. “Okay, fine. We’ll see. But be quiet, just in case!”
Janni rolled her eyes at him and continued pulling paper off, though a little more sedately, this time. The snuffling noise was louder when she had pulled it all off and was left with a big box with holes cut in the sides, and Janni stuck her eye right up against one.
“I can’t see anything!” She said, indignantly, and then glared around the room as the adults laughed. “What?”
“Because it’s dark in there. You’ll just have to open it,” Bill said, moving down to the floor by the box, settling on his knees next to Janni. “Want some help?”
Janni nodded absently, still trying to see into one of the holes. Bill tapped her on the shoulder and grasped the top of the box. “Let’s do this.”
Janni grabbed on to the other side of the top, not so much lifting as holding, and together, they pulled the top off. As Bill set it aside, Janni immediately peered inside.
Two sets of deep brown eyes stared back at her, looking almost as surprised and delighted to see Janni as she was to see the pups. Their sleek fur was brown and white and mottled with spots so similar that it was hard to tell them apart.
“See? Puppies! Twin puppies!” Janni grinned and reached into the box to try to lift one out. It wiggled and squirmed in her hands and she looked to Bill for assistance.
Soon enough, both puppies were out and rolling on the floor with Janni, nipping at her ears and her cheeks and licking at her while Tom grimaced, watching his daughter being covered in…puppy saliva.
“Janni, shouldn’t you thank the guys for your puppies?” Tom interrupted their playtime with a gentle reminder.
“Oh!” Janni stood up, pups play-fighting around her legs, and searched out Georg, finding him sitting in the easy chair by the couch. She ran to him and jumped on his lap, throwing her arms around him in a tight hug. “Thank you, thank you!” She slid quickly off his lap and flung herself at Gustav, sitting on the arm of the couch. She squeezed his neck tight when he bent down to her, and she thanked him, too.
“What will you name them?” Georg asked.
“Umm.” Janni looked back at the puppies, wrestling on the floor near Tom's feet. “I don’t know yet. They have to have really good names, so I have to think about it.”
“Ah,” was all Georg said, while Gustav chimed in.
“Wise decision.”
Simone came from the kitchen. “I just checked on the bird and it will be an hour or so yet. Wanna take these babies for a walk?” she asked Janni.
“Yeah! “ Janni ran to get her shoes, and Georg retrieved the bag Gustav had hung on the dining room chair when they came in.
“Her puppies come well equipped with collars, leashes, teething toys and a stainless steel food bowl. Because,” he held up his finger, “plastic bowls give puppies acne.”
“Really.” Tom looked at him disbelievingly, not sure if Georg was pulling his leg or not.
“It’s true. I did my research. So, no zitty puppies for Janni.” Georg grinned as he pulled the bowl from the bag and set it on the table.
“Got my shoes; let’s go!” Janni flew back into the room and skidded to a stop, her hands on her hips as everyone stared at her. “Ugh,” she grunted, “let’s go, you guys!”
~~~

Tom and Bill watched as everyone filed out the door, puppies winding around their ankles and tangling the leashes up before they even stepped a paw outside. The noise and energy went with them, leaving the house as silent and as peaceful as just before dawn. They’d promised to go with Janni later to walk the pups, but begged off for this first time, just to enjoy a few precious minutes alone.

Bill wrapped his arms around Tom from behind, pressing against him and nuzzling into his neck until Tom shivered. He could feel Bill’s grin and he was sure Bill did that on purpose, knowing Tom was ticklish.

“They’re gone and it’s quiet,” Bill whispered, his breath ghosting over Tom's ear. “Woo hoo!” Even Bill’s cheer was quiet and Tom rested his arms over Bill’s, twining their fingers together and leaning his head back on Bill’s shoulder.

“What should we do with this sudden gift of alone time?” Tom asked, already knowing exactly what Bill had in mind by the way he tried to subtly brush his groin against Tom's ass. They hadn’t had much time for love-making since the trial, mostly because Janni still found her way into their bed some nights and still wanted to be near them all the time during the day. It would take some time for her to feel secure again, and they understood that. In the meantime, though, it had been a while and they were long past due.

Bill hummed against the skin of Tom's neck, opening his lips and tasting him, his tongue moving in tiny licks until blood began to rush to Tom's groin. And then Bill scraped his teeth over his flesh before biting gently and Tom’s knees went weak.

“Mmhm,” Tom murmured. “That’s a great idea.”

Bill pulled away suddenly and grabbed his hand, his eyes dark and needy. He tugged Tom toward the stairs, though he didn’t have to coax, because no matter where they went or what they were doing, Tom would follow. Bill was his; his man, his love, his life. And together with Janni, they made a family. Not a conventional family, not a perfect family, but they were Tom's family. And he would never be without them.

~The End~

I finished writing this a week ago, having started it when the last chapter just wasn't gelling for me. At the time, I just knew that writing them happy was easier and I thought I would work on that for a while. I didn't think about how hard it was going to be say goodbye to this part of their story. However, I'm not saying goodbye to the characters. There's a oneshot cookie I've been sitting on for six months or so that I couldn't post until I finished this, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

That said, I thank you so much for sticking with me and Janni through this whole story. I've enjoyed writing that little girl so much. Thank you, too, for all the wonderful reviews and all the kind words. They really did make me want to make sure I did it right, and I hope you think I gave them the ending they deserve.

As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

~Mel

Such a lovely ending for a wonderful story, which I enjoyed from start to end. There are not many stories in which I feel so involved in that I will cry randomly while reading and this was one of them. You did a fantastic job with it and I'll be waiting for that one-shot.

Thanks for sharing this amazing story with us.

Well, it's done. My gosh what an epic trip this has been. Well done, my dear, well done! Like I said at the end of the last chapter, I should have printed this off, I may still do that. And take it on vacation with me, like Epiphany, last year!

You did an awesome, awesome job. I laughed, cried and cheered with these characters and I'm so sad to know it's over. I swear, you've been writing this for almost as long as I've known you. Now, I wait with anticipation for whatever venture you're going to undertake next. I'll just put my pompoms away for a little bit, give you a break, but I fully expect to get lots more use out of them.

[identity profile] steins-stories.livejournal.com 2010-08-18 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh honey, I think I wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for you! You supported me and cheered me on and listened to me gripe about writing and you didn't even put a hit out on me. Thank you so, so much, sweetheart. <333

I finally got around to finishing this :) (I put in a break until you were finished with it when I saw granny's evil plans coming, and I had a feeling Bill might have the bright idea to disappear because of it, so...)

I'm so glad they solved all of it ♥
Their dynamic is beautifully done, and I loved every minute of it :)

Thanks for the ride ☼
